This is the Maha Ganda Bell which weighs 23 tons. It was cast in the 1770s and taken by the British after the first Anglo-Burmese War in 1825. They accidentally dropped it in the river and were unable to retrieve it. The Burmese got it back by pushing logs and bamboo under it until it floated. The man with the bell's hammer quietly attached himself to us and tried to become our guide. He was certainly hoping to earn a bit of money from us. We didn't want a guide and eventually he left us alone. |
