The Botataung Paya was named for the 1000 military leaders who escorted relics of the Buddha from India to Myanmar over 2000 years ago. It was hit by an Allied bomb in 1943 and rebuilt with walkways inside the base of the stupa (rather than with a normal solid base). There are many relics and sacred objects within the stupa and in surrounding buildings. This sketch was helpful to us in identifying and naming the different parts of a traditional Myanmar pagoda. |
