This is the Mahamuni Buddha, one of the most venerated images in Burma. It was taken from Mrauk U in Rakhaing State in 1784 and was believed to be very old even then. It is cast bronze but has been covered over the years by 15cm (6 inches) of gold leaf applied by devout worshippers. The surface lumps are solid gold. Only men are allowed to approach this image. |
