The floating islands ("kyun myaw" in the local language) are constructed from water hyacinth, marsh grass and soil. They are staked to the bottom of the shallow lake with bamboo poles. These islands are very fertile and produce large amounts of food but have to be renewed periodically. They are built and farmed primarily by Intha people. There are 17 villages on stilts around the lake where these people live. |
