Nan Madol is a complex of 92 artificial islets, some of which have been dated back as far as 232 AD. It was the home of Pohnpei's rulers almost until the Europeans arrived. It is one of very few locations in the Pacific where stone was the primary building material. The site has been left unrestored for over 300 years. This magnificent wall gives an indication of how wonderful Nan Madol must have looked in its prime. |
