The Kosrae lagoon used to have many giant clams, but the islanders enjoy eating them so much that they are practically wiped out. To replace them, a few species are raised in artificial ponds (where this photo was taken) and then placed back into the lagoon. This small effort gets little government support, and the islanders probably eat most of the restocked clams. Each variety of clam seems to have different algae providing interior coloration. |
