On the island of Lelu the Chief of all Kosrae lived in a stone fortress. There were very few stone structures in the ancient Pacific, but here was a complex of buildings and canals. The stones are basalt, quarried from Kosrae's old volcano, and stacked like logs to form massive walls. This was a strong defense against spears and arrows, and was apparently never conquered.
