The "Canoe House" (also called "Waan Aelon in Majol") is both a building and an ongoing educational project. Here islanders are taught how to build canoes of wood and fiberglass. One objective is to redevelop a cadre of skilled boatbuilders, since very few locals know how to make boats. Another objective is to provide jobs for young men since few employment opportunities exist in these islands. The efforts underway here may rekindle interest and pride in the big, very fast canoes which once sailed these waters. |
