These are pandanus trees, and the green things which look somewhat like big hand grenades are their fruit. They have stilt-like roots, and leaves spiraling around the central stem give them the common name "screw pine." Pandanus and Coconut are the most important food trees which grow on low coral atolls. There are 650 species of pandanus, and they survive despite sandy soil, very hot sun, and brackish water. |
