The causeway linking Gan to the next islet was begun by the British when they had an air base here during WWII. It was part of a roadway which stretched 14 km (9 miles) up the atoll by the time we visited in 2011. In the evenings it was popular with walkers, especially young ladies displaying the latest fashions.
