One of the main products brought to Crater Bay was sand from mainland rivers. This was used for cement, and a cement block factory was practically on the beach. River sand was needed because it did not contain salt, whereas sand from beaches would be bad to use in construction. Unloading sand was very hard work. Some men carried four sandbags at a time.
