The "lateen" sail has a yard ("stick") along its top edge and extends on both sides of a relatively short mast. One end of the yard is generally tied to the front of the boat. The name derives from "latin" because the rig originated in the Mediterranean. It was a very popular arrangement on Malagasy boats, especially the larger ones. |
