Millipedes were the first land creatures, appearing over 400 million years ago. There are now more than 10,000 species, feeding mainly on decaying leaves. Millipedes are generally harmless to humans but some can emit caustic liquids which might irritate skin. These must not be confused with centipedes, some of which are very dangerous.
