Tsingy is limestone which has been exposed and eroded by water until it is a mass of sharp points, pinnacles and crevices. Ankarana has extensive areas of tsingy, an unusual environment which is the home for some unusual plants and animals. The black rocks in the foreground are volcanic results of eruptions more than 100 million years ago.
