A child's first birthday is a big event in Kiribati. We were invited to one of these celebrations. The parents rented the maneaba and invited practically the whole community. They had to provide decorations, fancy dresses for mother and daughter, heaps of food, and entertainment. It cost them a huge amount, but they evidently thought it worthwhile.
