This is a "baibai" (root vegetable much like taro) pit near Tebunginako Village. Baibai require plenty of water, and better soil than most coral atolls have. The pit, dug long ago, gives access to the fresh water lense beneath the atoll surface. The soil has undoubtedly been improved by adding compost through the years.
