Fiji's biggest export is sugar. Indians were originally brought by the British as indentured servants to work in the cane fields. Their descendents still do most of the cane growing and harvesting, though they usually work on land leased from ethnic Fijians. At harvest time, trucks line up at the entrance to the Labasa Mill, one of Fiji's four old sugar mills. |
