Tamaroa built his house on the beach at Albert Cove with materials gathered on the hillside. Rabi is a high, fertile island, mostly covered by jungle, with plenty of room for the 6,000 Banabans. The Banabans want to return "home" to Ocean Island, but that does not seem feasible. About 90 percent of the island's surface was destroyed by mining, so large-scale agriculture is nearly impossible. Ocean Island is now part of Kiribati and that country wants to mine the remaining phosphates. |
