Qaranivai earns money by preparing beche de mer (sea cucumbers) for the Chinese market. The men collect bags of them, and then the women (shown here) cut them open and discard the insides. The species most collected is the lollyfish (Holothuria atra) which lives in less than 20 meter depths. This is very common across the whole tropical Pacific region and is not an endangered species.
