When we sailed from Trinidad towards Carriacou our port rudder shaft broke and we lost that entire rudder. None of our sister-ships have had this problem. We do not know what caused this failure but perhaps it was cracked in a long-forgotten collision. Tom of "Ambler" holds the remaining part of the 2205 stainless steel pipe. This was made by Sandvik in Sweden and is twice as strong as 316L stainless steel.
