Near Angkor Wat is Angkor Thom, which means "Great City." It was constructed at the end of the 12th century and was the religious and administrative center of the powerful Khymer Empire. It was grander than any city in Europe at that time and its population may have been near one million. This photograph shows the central temple of Angkor Thom, the "Bayon," which has 54 towers, over 200 large faces and was apparently covered with gold.
