Richards Bay exports more coal (62.5 million tons in 2011) than any other port in the world. It also exports large amounts of aluminum, chromium, wood chips and other commodities. All ship and boat traffic is controlled by the Port Control officials from this tower overlooking the harbor and its entrance. We had to contact them on VHF radio channel 16 (or 12) for permission to enter and again to leave the port.
