Another photo of the high veld below the southern Drakensberg mountains, now mostly ranches and tree farms. Large herds of Eland once grazed these veld areas and although a few apparently remained we saw none. The San people (often referred to as "Bushmen") lived in this area for thousands of years and left paintings on cave walls. Driven out by cattle-herding tribes and Europeans, the Bushmen now survive in the Kalahari desert. |
