We were anchored in Patong Bay for New Year's Eve at the start of 2008. There was quite a boisterous party everywhere in town, and the fireworks display was extraordinary. The large resorts put on a midnight show with very large skyrockets, but lesser displays began as soon as it was dark and continued in a completely uncoordinated manner well into the wee hours. Rockets and firecrackers of all sizes were set off everywhere throughout the night. Vendors also sold hot air balloons powered by kerosene burners (about $4 for one 2 feet tall or $8 for one 4 feet tall). These were constantly being launched, and up to two hundred were sometimes visible in the air at one time. Most were blown out to sea, but some fell into the water dangerously close to boats.
