This image is thought to represent Avalokitesvara, the Mahayana Buddhist Bodhisattva of compassion. It still had much of its original stucco and some paint, probably due to the "drip line" cut into the rock above it. The female figure on the right is thought to represent his consort, Tara. Local legend says the figure on the left represents Prince Sudhana. The hands with fingers bent down toward the palm are displaying a beckoning gesture.
