Anuradhapura is a pilgrimage site for many Buddhists. Buddha achieved enlightenment under a particular Bodhi Tree in India. A cutting from that tree was brought to Sri Lanka more than 2000 years ago and the tree which grew from it still survives. Near the tree is the Thuparama Dagoba, constructed in the 3rd century BC and now probably the oldest visible stupa in the world. These people braved the floods to visit sacred sites.
