The children of Santa Ana came out in dugout canoes and were very interested in trading with us. Often they had nothing to trade but shells which we already had, but they rarely went away without a notebook, a pen, a pencil, or a packet of dried noodles. The dugouts sometimes swamped, but this was no problem because the kids were all good swimmers and knew just what to do. |
