Singapore is an island at the tip of the Malay Peninsula and one of the world's busiest ports. Almost all the ships are passing from the Straits of Malacca to the South China Sea and back. The channel past Singapore seems narrow because there are always processions of huge ships in both directions with the larger and faster ships overtaking the relatively smaller and slower ones, plus anchored ships and ships moving between the anchorages and the channels. Many of the largest ships are more than one thousand feet long. Sailboats have no right-of-way in the area so must constantly watch all ship movements and take evasive action when necessary. We worried about this giant ship until we were close enough to see its anchor chain.
