Not far from the Shwedagon is the Maha Wisaya Paya. It has huge guardian chinthes (or perhaps these are lions) but birds are not afraid to sit on their heads. The tall pole with the golden bird on top is a common sight at Myanmar temples but we did not learn its significance.
