Here is a Buddha image near the top of Mandalay Hill in a very unusual pose, pointing out towards the city below. This commemorates the legend that on one of his visits to Mandalay, accompanied by his disciple Ananda, he prophesied that a great city would be built here in the 2400th year of his faith. By our calendar, that year was 1857, the year that King Mindon Min decreed the move of his capital from Amarapura to Mandalay.
