This is a view from partway up the southeast stairway of Mandalay Hill. The array of small white stupas near the foot of the hill is in the Kuthodaw Paya. Each of the 729 stupas contain a marble slab with part of the Tripitaka, the Buddhist canon. This is sometimes called "the world's largest book" although the nearby Sandamani Paya has a similar array of stupas containing 1774 marble slabs inscribed with commentaries on the Tripitaka.
