Amarapura is 11km south of Mandalay. We got there via local bus (a pick-up truck) for $.20 each. This was the royal capital before Mandalay. Lake Taungthaman was named for an ogre who supposedly came here looking for Buddha. The shallow lake expands greatly during the rainy season and shrinks through the dry season. This pedestrian bridge was built in 1849 with over 1000 teak posts and is 1.2km long, the longest teak span in the world. The bridge is curved to withstand the wind and most of its posts are original. It is known as "U Bein's Bridge" though there is apparently some debate about who U Bein was.
