The settlement was named for this type of tree, locally called "Penang," better known as a betel-nut palm. The fruit is chewed with lime and certain pepper leaves throughout the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean. It has a slightly narcotic effect, is habit-forming, and is extremely bad for the long-term health of teeth and gums.
