Tarawa was the scene of a fierce WWII battle between U.S. Marine invaders and defending Japanese troops. The invading troops arrived at low tide so their landing crafts could not get very close to the beach. The guns of defenders on shore took a heavy toll during this poorly planned assault. US Marines eventually took over the island, but their casualties were heavy.
