John was one of Aitutaki's most accomplished fishermen. He built his own canoe from a breadfruit tree trunk. He fished both inside and outside the reef, and even went spearfishing alone outside the reef at night. (Yikes!) By selling fish he paid for his electricity and telephone. He often called his children in Australia.
