In Groot Baai there were several twelve-meter yachts which once raced for the America's Cup. In 1987 Dennis Connor sailed this "Stars & Stripes" to win the cup back from Australia. Many sailors were nostalgic about these boats which were more "normal" than the boats which have competed for that cup lately. Teams of skilled sailors took tourists in their crews to learn about racing. There was also a 12 Meter Club ashore, helping to keep traditions alive.
