Victor Schoelcher donated his collection of books to Martinique in 1883. Most of those books were destroyed in a 1890 fire in a building on Rue Victor Hugo. This building was designed by Pierre-Henri Picq to protect the remaining 1600 volumes. Its cement and metal construction enables it to withstand hurricanes. We thought its architectural design and decorative features made it the most interesting building in Fort de France. |
