Stromatolites are rocklike structures formed in shallow seawater when films of cyanobacteria bind grains of sand into layers. These are the oldest known organisms, with fossils dating back 3.5 billion years. Living stromatolites are found today only in a few locations in western Australia and the Bahamas. These off Stocking Island are no longer living and look much like some other coastal rock formations.
