"Father Jerome" (John Hawes) was initially a priest of the Church of England. He was also the architect who designed and built St Paul's Church in Clarencetown, Long Island, Bahamas. Then he converted to Catholicism and served as a priest in Australia. After retirement in 1939 he returned to the Bahamas, bought Como Hill and renamed it "Mount Alvernia" after a hill in Tuscany which was the favorite retreat of St Francis of Assisi. |
