This marks the Tropic of Capricorn, the farthest south latitude that ever has the Sun directly overhead (which occurs on the December solstice). This part of Africa is the same distance from the Equator as Georgetown in the Bahamas. Almost all of South Africa is below this, in a temperate zone comparable to the southern part of the United States. |
